February MakerSpace Club - Cupid Breakout Box

Students worked diligently on math problems, bar graphs, and rebuses to unlock 4 locks and get into our box.  They were able to help equip Cupid with the tools he needed for Valentine's Day!

Read Across America Week 2019

READ ACROSS AMERICA 2019
at Oakland Elementary

The week of February 25th – March 1st is the National Education Association’s Read Across America week, held in conjunction each year with Dr. Seuss’s (Theodor Seuss Geisel) birthday on March 2. Oakland Elementary will be celebrating reading and the life of Dr. Seuss with the following activities and events:
v  Learning from author & illustrator Bradd Parton on Friday, March 1st. He will discuss creativity, point of view, writing, and illustrating with students.  Bradd will have autographed books and t-shirts available for purchase (SEE ORDER FORM). Bradd’s book will be about our school and will list students’ names in the back.  This would be a great keepsake, and $5 from each book purchase goes to our school! ALL ORDERS ARE DUE BY WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6th.  After ordering, the books and shirts will take 4-5 weeks to return from the printer.
v  Reading and sharing Dr. Seuss’s books during library time.
v  Distributing Read Across America bookmarks and other treats to students.
v  Eating special Dr. Seuss foods in the cafeteria.
v  Reading our way across America!  Students will receive a special reading log for the week, & family members are encouraged to read along with us.
v  Dressing up each day to match a Dr. Seuss book –

MONDAY – Wear your favorite color! (My Many Colored Days)
TUESDAY – Wear crazy socks! (Fox in Socks)
WEDNESDAY- Grab a friend and dress up as twins! (The Cat in the Hat – Thing One and Thing Two)
THURSDAY – Style your hair in a crazy way!  (Daisy-Head Mayzie)
FRIDAY – Wear your favorite hat!  (The Cat in the Hat)

v  Participating in student contests:

Kindergarten and First Grades – “Find the Missing Cat in the Hat”
Students will look for hidden cats in hats around the school during the week and turn them into the library for a prize.
Second, Third, and Fourth Grades – “Dr. Seuss Trivia”

Librarian for the Day

Jody Mallory won the opportunity to be "Librarian for the Day" at the OES Fall Festival in November.  She was able to spend the day with me this past Friday.  Jody helped students find books, read stories to classes, checked out library books, and worked on many other tasks throughout the day.  I really appreciated her help and her enthusiasm.  She did a great job!

December MakerSpace Club

Last week, students in the MakerSpace Club had to solve challenges on task cards using specific materials.  For example, students had to create an ice scraper for Santa's sleigh using cotton swabs and rubber bands.  They had to use only paper and tape to create a pouch for Santa's cookies and use pipe cleaners to create a harness for the reindeer.  Aluminum foil was used to create a Thermos for Santa's hot chocolate...  And more!  Students had to think creatively to solve these Christmas challenges.
