The Underground Railroad, Quilts, & MakerSpace

Mr. Carroll's all boys class visited the library Wednesday morning to use MakerSpace stations as part of a Social Studies project.  They are beginning a unit of study about the Civil War and the Underground Railroad.  Students worked in various stations using iPads, computers, books, arts & crafts materials, & Legos.  The book Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt was read aloud to students on Tuesday.  In the library, they used two websites (Pathways to Freedom and DISCUS), as well as library books, to research information about the Underground Railroad. Students then utilized the ShowMe or Educreation apps on their iPads to plan their quilt using secret codes and patterns.  Finally, students visited one of three stations to create their quilt:  *Legos (using baseplates and bricks), *Arts & Crafts, or *Computers (using an interactive design website).  I was impressed with the boys' level of intensity and creativity!
