Paws for Books ~ Book Fair Schedule



    The Scholastic Book Fair will be held at OES Monday, March 26 through Thursday, March 29 in the Media Center.  Each classroom will be visiting the Book Fair for 25 minutes.  The schedule is listed below.  The Book Fair will also be open from 5-6:30 pm on Thursday evening (PTA/Jungle Book performance) if you would like to shop with your child.  The attached flyer shows a sample of what will be available for sale.  In addition, if you would like to help in buying books for your child’s classroom, a teacher wish list will be available at the fair.  Profits from the fair will go towards purchasing new library books. Thanks for your support!

  Preston Thorne and Langston Moore are authors and former football players for the University of South Carolina. Langston & Preston will be conducting an Author Visit on February 28th at OES.
  If you are interested in purchasing copies of the book #JustaChicken, they will be on sale that day.  Anyone purchasing a book will have the opportunity to have his/her book autographed. READ ACROSS AMERICA
2018 at Oakland Elementary  

                                                                                
  The week of February 26th – March 2nd is the National Education Association’s Read Across America week, held in conjunction each year with Dr. Seuss’s (Theodor Seuss Geisel) birthday on March 2.  Oakland Elementary will be celebrating reading and the life of Dr. Seuss with the following activities and events:

·         Learning from authors Langston Moore & Preston Thorne on Wednesday, February 28th.  These former football stars will share their book #JustaChicken and a message on literacy and life-long learning.
·         Enjoying special read-aloud times with visitors from our community.  
·         Reading and sharing Dr. Seuss books during library time.
·         Distributing Read Across America bookmarks and other treats to students.
·         Eating special Dr. Seuss foods in the cafeteria.
·         Dressing up each day to match a Dr. Seuss book –
MONDAY – For Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, wear something from a place you have been.
TUESDAY – Wear a tie or a scarf to go along with Hop on Pop.
WEDNESDAY- For The Cat in the Hat, wear something red and white.
THURSDAY – Wear crazy socks to go along with Fox in Socks.
FRIDAY – For One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, wear something red and blue.
·         Participating in student contests:
Kindergarten and First Grades – “Find the Missing Cat in the Hat”
Students will look for hidden cats in hats around the school during the week and turn them into the library for a prize.
Second, Third, and Fourth Grades – “Bookmark Bonanza”
Students will be given blank bookmarks to decorate.  The bookmark may be decorated with anything related to reading or books.  There are no limitations on the type of art supplies used; colored pencils, crayons, paint, stickers, etc. are fine.  Prizes will be awarded on each grade level.  Bookmarks are due in the library on Thursday, March 1st at 2 pm.  Please be sure the student’s name and the homeroom teacher’s name are on the back of the bookmark.
