Summer Reading Celebration 2016

Seventy-one students participated in our Summer Reading Celebration last Friday afternoon.  These students either completed the OES Summer Reading sheet or participated in the Summer Learning Academy.  These students were treated to watermelon and orange slices.  Unfortunately, the weather was stormy, and we were unable to go outside for extra recess time.  Students still had an enjoyable time though!

MakerSpace and Habitats

Mrs. Clark's all-girls class has been visiting the library to create habitats in MakerSpace stations.  They have been researching and taking notes about many habitats in science.  The girls are now creating some of the habitats (rainforest, desert, ocean, and freshwater) using Legos and arts/crafts materials.

Summer Reading 2016 at OES

This is a copy of the letter that will be sent home with students next week about summer reading...

"Building a Bright Future: Minds Under Construction"

v  Oakland Elementary (K – 3^rd graders only): This year for summer reading, students will log in books by “building” a brick wall on the back of this paper.  Students must write the date and title of each book as it is completed, and parents must initial each brick.  All papers must be turned in to the media center by Friday, August 19^th and must be completed entirely to receive a summer reading celebration.  Summer reading is extremely important to help maintain what your child has learned this year and to help prepare him/her for next school year.  Have a great summer, and READ, READ, READ!

v  Boiling Springs Public Library: The Children’s Summer Reading Program is for birth through 12 year-olds. Kids read books, fill in their reading records, and earn cool prizes. It’s that easy! There are no reading lists – everyone gets to read the books that they want to read.  The Program starts on the last day of school and ends July 31st. Riverbanks Zoo - 2nd Grade Field Trip

I enjoyed chaperoning 2nd grade's field trip on May 12th.  They visited Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia.

Introducing the OES "Little Library" Book Exchange

A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common version is a small wooden box of books. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share.

Little Free Library book exchanges have a unique, personal touch. There is an understanding that real people are sharing their favorite books with their community; Little Libraries have been called “mini-town squares.”

At Oakland, our Little Library was created by 4th grade students under the direction of Mr. Carroll (4th grade teacher) and Mrs. Sutton (4th grade parent). It is located in the courtyard area behind the library.  Students may bring a book that is appropriate for students in 4K through 4th grade and exchange it for a new book in the Little Library.  Happy Reading!
