2015 at Oakland Elementary  

  The week of March 2^nd – 6^th is the National Education Association’s Read Across America week, held in conjunction each year with Dr. Seuss’s (Theodor Seuss Geisel) birthday on March 2.  Oakland Elementary will be celebrating reading and the life of Dr. Seuss with the following activities and events:

• Enjoying a reading show presented by author, illustrator, musician, & speaker Chris Rumble on Tuesday, March 3^rd. ***If you are interested, an order form for Chris Rumble’s books is attached.  He will autograph each book that is purchased.  Order forms and money should be turned in on the day of his visit – Tuesday, March 3^rd.
• Reading and sharing books by Dr. Seuss during library time.
• Distributing Read Across America bookmarks and other treats to students.
• Eating special Dr. Seuss foods in the cafeteria.
• Visiting with “the CAT in the HAT.”
• Participating in student contests:

Kindergarten and First Grades – “Find the Missing Cat in the Hat”

           Students will look for hidden cats in hats around the school during the week and them into the  
           library for a prize.

Second, Third, and Fourth Grades – “Dr. Seuss Trivia”

            Students will be given 5 trivia questions about Dr. Seuss to answer.The names of students with   
            the correct answers will go into a basket for prize drawings.

• Dressing up for a CHARACTER PARADE - This will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 4^th, in conjunction with South Carolina’s Walk to School Day.  Students and teachers can dress up as a character in a book.  Students will need to carry a copy of the book with them during the parade. 

 

 

 

                                                                         

Pancakes with the Principals

Congratulations to the classes on each grade level that read the most during our Christmas Reading Challenge!  They enjoyed yummy pancakes with toppings this morning and received a trophy for their classroom.

And the Winners Are... Christmas Reading Challenge

Congratulations to the following classes for reading the most minutes on their grade level over Christmas Break.  These classes will receive a trophy and get to enjoy "Pancakes with the Principals."

5K - Fortner
1st - McMahon
2nd - Lunsford
3rd - Jones
4th - Gault

Also, our school came in 3rd place in the Spartanburg District 2 competition.  Congratulations to Carlisle-Foster's Grove Elementary on reading the most minutes!

I am proud of all of our All-Star readers!  As a school, 316 students read 8,509 steps, which is more than 2,127 hours!  WOW!

Librarian for the Day - William Scott

I enjoyed having William Scott as my "sidekick" today.  He won the opportunity to be "Librarian for the Day" at the Fall Festival auction.  William did a fabulous job as librarian.

Christmas Reading Challenge

 

Christmas Reading Challenge

Students at OES will be participating in a Christmas Reading Challenge by reading as much as they can over the holiday break.  The challenge begins on Friday, December 19^th upon dismissal from school and concludes on Monday, January 5^th when we return.  Students may use the special “Winter Break Challenge” logs that are attached to the paper sent home.  If they are filled, notebook paper may be attached to the log.  All logs must be turned in on January 5^th.  These steps will be added to his or her regular reading log, also!  ***New this year – All students that participate in reading over the break will receive a special surprise!

We are competing against other District 2 schools for a trophy and bragging rights.  In addition, the class with the highest percentage of reading per grade level will receive a trophy for their class and “Pancakes with the Principals.” 

We encourage every student to READ, READ, READ over the break to maintain the progress made thus far this school year!  We would love to share pictures of you reading on the OES Facebook page & on Twitter, especially as you travel and participate in holiday events.  Use #OESread to share your reading pictures with us!
